Barrett. K.S.L.I.; L.S>G.C. (Geo V) 7808134 SJt T. Barrett. K.S.L.I. (Group swing mounted as worn) With a sporting medallion, (engraved to reverse) Four round contest, L/Cpl T. Barrett, Winner, 1913. With original document: Regular Army certificate of service (Red book), Gallantry Card dated 19th December 1915, Small arms school attendance card, Vocational training certificate, Regimental Christmas card. Thomas Barrett was born in 1891 He served in the 5th Rifle Brigade from 24th March 1908 to 1st March 1909, then 1st battalion Kings Shropshire Light Infantry to 28th November 1915, Machine Gun Corps to 7th January 1919. His MIC shows he landed in France on the 10th September 1914., clasp confirmed. Distinguished Conduct medal: London Gazette 15th March 1916: “For conspicuous gallantry during and after the gas attack. He went across 60 yards of open ground, within close range of the enemy, to bring back a man who had been incapacitated” The copied pages of the war diary for 19th December 1915:- “At 5-15a.m. the enemy made a gas attack on our trenches with what is evidently a new form of gas. The “gassing” lasts for about an hour, after which enemy assaults our line in small bodies. One party of 10 and another of about 30 attack the Mortsldje Salient, but are quickly driven back by our rifle fire, and officer & a man of the former party being seen to fall. The gas attack is said to have extended from the Verlosenhoek Road to the point where the British line crosses the canal. At the same time, there is a heavy bombardment of our support trenches & all communications which continues throughout the day. Our casualties on this day are 2 killed, 14 wounded, 4 die of gas poisoning and 39 are suffering from gas poisoning.” His redbook covers his later enlistment in the machine gun corps (Inf) on the 8th January 1919 at Bessines, Belgium, he served in the M.G.C. (in France) from 8th January 1919 to 28th March 1919, the at home to 13th October 1919, then M.G.C & K.S.L.I. in India to 22nd October 1922, K.S.L.I. at home to 21st November 1924, Germany to 2nd November 1927, then home to 1st March 1931, when he was discharged. His L.S.G.C. medal was awarded in October 1927 It is know that the regimental museum has a photograph of Barrett.
