Marton Captain Lionel Marton was born in Carnforth, Lancashire. His MIC shows he landed in France on the 20th September 1915, and confirms his entitlement to a Silver War Badge His address on his MIC is given as, Capernwray Hall, Carnforth, Lancashire. Placed on temporary half pay due to ill health on 20th April 1907 War Diary records him as being struck off the strength on 3rd February 1917. He died on the 28th December 1934, at Foxhill Holme, Westmoreland. The 7th (Service) Battalion of the Princess Charlotte of Wales’s (Royal Berkshire Regiment) was a “Kitchener” unit raised in September 1914 at Reading. Unlike many other British units that spent the war on the Western Front, the 7th spent the vast majority of its service fighting in the Salonika Campaign The battalion landed at Le Havre, France, on 20 September 1915. However, they stayed for less than two months before being ordered to the Mediterranean theatre. They participated in the Battle of Horseshoe Hill (1916) and the First and Second Battles of Doiran (1917). During the 1917 attacks, the battalion suffered heavy losses, including nearly 250 casualties in a single action in April. Condition – GVF
