Description Pre War Palestine and WW2 Prisoner of War group – The Buffs. General Service Medal 1918-62 (Geo VI) clasp, Palestine, 628 6126, Pte. W. Turrell . The Buffs.l 1939-45 Star; Africa Star; Defence Medal; 1939-45 War Medal. William John Turrell was from Weymouth Dorset born on the 26th June 1917, Lived at “Castle Inn” The Grove, Dorchester, Dorset. He served in the 1st battalion East Kent regiment) The Buffs Correct on the medal roll for his G.S.M. Palestine. Reported as missing 15th December 1941, Western Desert. Confirmed as Prisoner of War on the 28th January 1942. POW report confirms he was captured on the 1st December 1941 near Gazala, Libya. He was held camp PG 59, PG 33, Stalag 17A, Stalag 398.being released on the 6th May 1945. He records that he spent from 11th December 1943 to 6th May 1945 “Felling timber” He also talks about the help and food given by a local family, and Ukrainian girls who offered to hid men if there is trouble from the SS.
