Description Second World War Western Europe casualty (Bremen Germany) – 2nd Battalion Kings Shropshire Light Infantry. 1939-45 Star; France and Germany Star; Defence medal; 1939-45 War medal; General Service medal (1918-1962) “Palestine 1945-48”, 14629740 Pte A S Drew KSLI. Casualty records show he was wounded in Western Europe on the 25th April 1945 The final battle of the Second World War for 2/KSLI took place over 25th and 26th April 1945, South East of the Northern Port of Bremen in Germany. At least three British Divisions made a coordinated assault on the Port from different directions. 2/KSLI commenced its assault on a factory and a railway bridge near the villages of Dreye and Arsten. Much of the land was low lying and flooded. Assisting 2/KSLI were two tank troops of the 4/7 Dragoon Guards and Royal Engineers. The infantry of 2/KSLI advance along the countryside near the road and the railway line. German infantry was supported by the fire of anti aircraft guns in a ground role and a number of self-propelled guns. ‘Z’ Company led by Major T H Read atacked along the railway line in a bayonet charge and overran the German positions including anti aircraft guns. Major Read was wounded in the leg but was awarded a bar to his military cross for his role in the attack. ‘Y’ Company led by Major Heatley stormed a factory but Major Heatley was wounded in his arm. Captain Derick Cave Clapham from ‘X’ Company took command and led the assault to a successful conclusion. Over two hundred Germans were taken in the combined actions.
