R.A.; Harry Golesworthy was born in Gibraltar in 1867 and educated at the Royal Military Asylum. Distinguished Conduct Medal, London Gazette, 27th September 1901:- “A very excellent N.C.O. who has rendered valuable services throughout the campaign. His services have been specially brought to notice by the officer commanding 2nd battery Royal Field Artillery” He attested in the Royal Artillery on the 31st December 1881. (aged 14) Appointed Trumpeter 28th August 1882, Bombardier 22nd November 1887, Corporal 2nd May 1888, Sergeant 17th November 18901. He suffered from burns to his hands and face whilst on duty on the 20th June 1890, having served in South Africa from October 1883 to November 1885, and India from September 1893 to December 1898. Advanced to Battery Sergeant Major on 4th October 1897. South Africa from 21st January 1900. Discharged on 7th May 1903. He married Matilda Twyman at St Marys Northgate, Canterbury on 6th February 1887. 2nd battery R.F.A. arrived at the Cape on 12th February 1900, was in action near Thabanchu on 25th April, at Biddulphsberg, near Senekal, under General Rundle, on 29th May, and in many minor actions in the northeast of the Orange River Colony, generally under General Rundle (Lord Kitchener’s despatch of 8th July 1901). Died at Romsey District Hospital, Hampshire on 27th August 1941. Son: William Harry Golesworthy was born in London in 1892 , and lived at Wimbledon Common. His MIC confirms his 1914-15 trio and that he landed in France on the 15th January 1915. Died October 1958 in Brighton, Sussex Condition – Fathers medals GVF, lightly polished, sons 1915 trio slightly better.
