At the commencement of the second world war he was 35 years of age. In 1943 J.A.M. Davidson was serving as a Sergeant. In the Supplement to the London Gazette 26 October 1943, 352159 Sergeant John Alexander Matthew Davidson was appointed to a commission in the Administrative and Special Duties branch, this to be dated 2nd September 1943. The medals shown above would suggest the he served at some time in the campaigns in Sicily and /or Italy. The award of the R.A.F. Long Service & Good Conduct medal shows the he must have served at least twelve, of the fifteen years qualification requirement, in the ranks and that his conduct had met the necessary requirements for the award of the medal. This minimum qualification period of 12 years ordinary ranks service must have been achieved before his commissioning on the 2nd September 1943. As a consequence of this he must have been serving in the RAF by no later then September 1931. The October 1940 Air Force List does not list him as holding Warrant Officers rank. The January 1944 Air Force List shows him as a Pilot Officer serving in the Administrative Branch and Special Duties Branch specifically, Special Duties (Mechanical Transport). This is repeated in the March 1944 Air Force List. The Supplement to the London Gazette 28th April 1944 shows his promotion from Pilot Officer on probation to war substantive Flying Officer dated 2nd March 1944. The Supplement to the London Gazette 21st June 1946 shows his promotion to war substantive Flight Lieutenant dated 18th March 1946 and still in the Administrative Branch and Special Duties Branch. The Supplement to the London Gazette 9th December 1946 shows him transferring as a war substantive Flight Lieutenant to the Secretariat Branch and retaining his existing rank and seniority dated 1st November 1947. The Supplement to the London Gazette 18th December 1951 shows him as a Flying Officer serving in the Equipment Branch and noting his transfer to the reserve and being called up for air force service. The retired list of the Air Force List 1971 confirms his promotion to Flight Lieutenant on the 10th November, 1955 and now (on retirement) serving in the Engineer Branch (formerly Technical Branch). As his appointment to be an Ordinary Member of the Military Division of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire was gazetted on the 2nd January 1956 his qualifying service and recommendation must have been made whilst he was serving as a Flying Officer in the Engineer Branch (formerly Technical Branch). The retired list of the air force list 1971 confirms his retirement fro the RAF as a Flight Lieutenant and Member of the Military Division of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire.
