Colonel William Lewis Gray was born in London on the 17th July 1864 the son of Alexander Gray M.D. (of Selby West Yorkshire) 5th February 1887 – Surgeon Army Medical Staff c 1891 nomenclature changed to Surgeon captain A.M.Staff June 1898 changed to Captain R.A.M.C. 5th February 1899 – Major R.A.M.C. 2nd August 1911 – Lieut Colonel R.A.M.C. 1st March 1915 – Colonel R.A.M.C. Retired 1921 and died of Pneumonia on North Holt, Hythe, Kent on the 3rd November 1924 He served both at home and in Madras between 1887 and 1900, taking part in the Chitral Relief Expedition in 1895 1889 to 1890, Anglo Siamese Boundary commission. 1890 to 1891 Kieuglung Chienghai mission. In South Africa from 3rd April 1900to 4th August 1902. Mentioned in Lord Roberts Despatches of 2nd April 1901; London gazette 16th April 1901. Served at home and, South Africa and Malta 1912, then in India and home to 3rd September 1915. France from 4th September 1915 to 18th january 1817 (A.D.M.S. 22nd and 2nd divisions.) Home service at The Royal Herbert Hospital, Woolwich from 13th January 1917 to 9th August 1919. C.M.G. London Gazette 1st January 1917:- For services in connection with Military Operations in the Field” Mentioned in Despatches, London Gazette 15th June 1916 and 4th January 1917. Retired Pay from 10th August 1919 and having reached the age limit ceased to belong to the reserve of officers. Condition – Some contact marks but NEF
