Description Afghanistan, Kandahar – 5/11th Bde Royal Artillery. Afghanistan 1878-79-80, clasp, Kandahar, 3303 Gunr W. Redding. 5/11th Bde R.A. Correct on medal roll. 5th Battery, 11th Brigade Royal Artillery was equipped with three 40 pounder guns and three 8 inch mortars. It entered Afghanistan via Dadar and the Bolan Passit arrived in Kandahar on the 13th January 1879, however towards the end of July 1879 it was ordered back to Quetta where it remained. Ordered again to Kandahar under cape G.M.B. Hornsby it departed on the 9th February, reaching its destination later in February., on arrival it exchanged its equipment with 6/11 RA. Immediately after the news of the disaster at Maiwand they were moved into the Citadel. During the siege their guns were employed daily in keeping the enemy fire down from Picquet Hill and other places., the mortars being used in shelling adjoining villages and molesting parties of the enemy who attempted to throw up earthworks and establish batteries. They were also engaged in shelling the village of Deh Khwaja and covering the advance of the infantry during the sortie. During the battle of Kandahar they took up positions at the base of Picquet Hill and were part of the force told off for the direct feint attack and immediately went into action opening fire on the enemy forces in position on the Baba Wali Kotel. The battery was in action for nearly four hours, expending 161 rounds. On the 16th October they left Kandahar for India. Condition – VF, some contact marks.
