WWII U.S. Army 101st Airborne Division ‘White Tongue’ Sleeve Patch – (Type 6)

Description This is a rare ‘white tongue’ 101st Airborne Division with white “snow backing” on the reverse side of the patch. The background of the patch is black twill. This is an excellent condition desirable patch that is very hard to find. Amongst collectors these WWII 101st Airborne patches have 9 known types, this example is known as the type 6. Note – These white tongue patches are early runs of the insignia and were done due to an oversight by the Quartermaster department to not specify the color of the tongue as red. The original spec sheets were all done in black and white. With no specification for the tongue to be red, manufacturers assumed that the tongue was to be white. There error was quickly caught and corrected, but thousands of patches were made with the white tongue before the correction. Many of these patches will be “corrected” in the field using ink, paint or even hand stitching red thread over the white tongue.
